Discipling Muslim-Background Believers in Middle East

October 18th, 2018

Muslim Background as a Christian

A person born into a Muslim family in the Middle East is not at liberty to choose their faith. The strong culture and traditions forbid anyone in Islam to question or evaluate their beliefs. Doing so would usually put them at risk of physical harm or even death.

This reality makes it all the more shocking that the numbers of born-again Christians in the Middle East are growing.

It is estimated that in Iran alone there are almost seven million followers of Jesus today!

Whether they come to faith thanks to a supernatural vision, as a result of their personal quest for truth or through an encounter with another believer, there remains the question: what next?

Young believers of Muslim background are hungry for more and eager to share with others the hope they found. In response to this pressing need for discipleship an initiative was birthed, called Derech Avraham (Abraham’s Journey).

Derech Avraham is part of an international movement dedicated to raising a new generation of Christ followers across the Middle East, with special focus on Muslim-background believers.

While discipleship is the main objective of the ministry, it is also heavily involved in planting churches, raising up houses of prayer and assisting refugees in the Middle East and beyond. However, what is unique about this initiative is the fact that it has been started and is run by Israelis.

The ministry leaders are very intentional about their goal to bring together descendants of Isaac and Ishmael – Abraham’s sons, and fathers to the nations of the Middle East – for the sake of God’s Kingdom.

The promise given to Abraham, together with the promises spoken in Isaiah 19, point to blessings that will only be realized when the nations in this region join together in faith and walk together in worship, reconciliation, and blessing.

The Lord said to Abraham that He will make him into a great nation and make him a blessing to the world (Genesis 12:1-3).

Through the efforts of Derech Avraham, small groups of Israeli believers are fulfilling these words by traveling to key locations in the region to support, assist and develop discipleship trainings. Gatherings in places like Northern Iraq, Turkey, Jordan, Cyprus and Armenia encourage new initiatives and supply resources for ongoing projects in the region.
